Taxi Fares - Victoria (Australia)

On 1 July 2016, the latest Essential Services Commission fare determination took effect. Maximum taxi fares in the Melbourne metropolitan zone and eastern urban zone (Dandenong, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula) will remain unchanged.

Maximum taxi fares in the urban zone (Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong) have changed.

Taxi fares vary based on distance, location and time of travel. Additional charges apply if you travel on some public holidays, book in advance, make an electronic payment, use toll roads, or in a vehicle with five or more passengers.

  • Taxi Fares

    Metropolitan Melbourne, Frankston, Dandenong and Mornington Peninsula

    The following maximum taxi fares may be charged in Metropolitan Melbourne, Frankston, Dandenong and Mornington Peninsula.

    Airport rank fee Applies to taxis hired from the Melbourne airport rank. $3.58

    High occupancy fee

    For 5-11 passengers (including a person(s) who uses a wheelchair or other mobility aid) or where the hirer specifically requests a larger than standard taxi regardless of the number of passengers (except where the booking is for a person(s) who uses a wheelchair or other mobility aid). $14.00

    Holiday rate

    Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and from 6pm on New Year's Eve. Peak rate to apply
    Premium service charge When the hirer has specifically requested the hire of a premium service vehicle and agreed to a charge of up to $11. $11.00

    Electronic payments

    A maximum 5% fee applies when using credit/debit cards, and all other non-cash payments. 5% (GST inclusive)

  • Urban Fares

    Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo

    The following maximum fares may be charged in Urban taxis (Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo).

    Standard Taxi Fare

    For taxis carrying up to 4 passengers (standard taxi) or any multiple hiring.

    Time (applies if the speed is below 21km per hour) $0.643 per minute

    High Occupancy Taxi Fare

    For 5-11 passengers (including a person(s) who uses a wheelchair or other mobility aid) or where the hirer specifically requests a larger than standard taxi regardless of the number of passengers (except where the booking is for a person(s) who uses a wheelchair or other mobility aid).

    Urban taxis are allowed to pick up passengers at Melbourne Airport on a pre-booked basis only.

    The holiday fee applies from 7pm on the evening prior to all public holidays and all day Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and from 6pm on New Year's Eve (but not after 6am on other public holidays). The late night fee does not apply during the holiday fee period.

    The premium service charge applies when the hirer has specifically requested the hire of a premium service vehicle and agreed to a charge of up to $11.

    Charges may also apply to electronic payments and toll roads.

    The following fares may be charged in Victorian country and regional taxis.

    Notified fares

    Taxi operators in country and regional areas may choose to set their own fares, but must notify the Taxi Services Commission and passengers. If the operator has not set alternative fares, the rates below will continue to apply.

    Standard Taxi Fare

    For taxis carrying up to four passengers (standard taxi) or any multiple hiring.
